In 1958 Gary Ward came from Ramona, OK to join the Norseman Baseball Team coached by Homa Thomas. He also played basketball for the Norseman under Coach Max Buzzard. From NEO Ward went on to compete in both sports at NMSU from 1960-1962. During the 1960 season he led the team in win-loss record as a pitcher and ERA. Ward has been inducted into the NMSU Hall of fame for his accomplishments as an athlete. Ward has served 21 seasons as a Division I Head Baseball Coach and compiled a record of 1022-361-1. He is one of the few who have won over 1,000 games in a career. At Oklahoma State, Ward lead his teams to 10 College World Series appearances, 985 wins, 17 Big Eight championships (16 in a row), 18 seasons with 40 or more wins, and twelve of his teams finished in Baseball America’s top 10. Ward mentored a total of 56 All-Americans and while at OSU 97 of his players were selected in the major league draft. Ward is a collegiate baseball giant posting the top winning percentage of al NCAA Division I coaches in history. IN 2008,Ward was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
