James Wilder was a standout running back for the Golden Norsemen Football team in 1977, earning NJCAA All-American Honorable Mention. Wilder’s performance at NEO set the stage for a legendary collegiate and professional career.
Following his time at NEO, Wilder transferred to the University of Missouri, where he became one of the greatest running backs in school history. Over three seasons, he rushed for a then-school record 2,357 yards, leading the Tigers in rushing each year. Despite battling a hamstring injury in 1979, Wilder delivered several unforgettable performances, including 181 yards on 28 carries, and four-touchdowns against Nebraska in 1978, capped by the game-winning score in a thrilling 35–31 victory. That same season, he was named MVP of the Liberty Bowl, where Mizzou defeated LSU.
Wilder was selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he spent nine seasons and became one of the franchise’s most celebrated players. He still holds several team records, including career rushing yards (6,008), rushing attempts (1,586), and once held the team record for receptions (431). In 1984, he was selected for the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro after setting multiple NFL records, including most carries in a game (43), most carries in a season (407), and most total touches in a season (492), all of which were later surpassed.
He concluded his NFL career in 1990 with the Washington Redskins and Detroit Lions. Known as “The Sikeston Train” for his hometown roots in Sikeston, Missouri, Wilder’s blend of power, endurance, and heart left an enduring impact on every level of football he touched.
