As President of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College for 27 years, Dr. Bruce G Carter served longer than any NEO president to date. A native of Chickasha, Dr. Carter came to Northeastern Oklahoma in 1943 as President of a “failing” institution. Shortly thereafter he finished earning his doctorate degree at the University of Oklahoma. During Carter’s presidential tenure, Northeastern A&M grew from approximately 200 to 2500 students. He promoted nationally know programs in agriculture, vocational-technical education, girl’s physical education (including AAU Basketball and the Norse Star Drill Team), and athletics. He led the construction of five dormitories, administration-library complex, vo-tech buildings, the Business-education facility, gymnasium, Fine Arts Building, four apartment buildings, stadium expansion, football dressing rooms as well as many other projects. Under the leadership exemplified by Dr. Bruce G. Carter the college of Northeastern A&M set the standard nationwide Dr. Carter set a pattern of leadership to provide for even further growth, further heights of greatness in the years to come.
