As a college student, Smith lettered in baseball, basketball and football at two different colleges – Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and Midwestern University in Wichita Falls. Smith’s contribution to Golden Norsemen Athletics is remarkable and spans over 50 years. He was assistant football coach and athletic counselor at NEO from 1953-55 where he influenced the lives of many of NEO’s student athletes.  His dedication to NEO is still evident through his current service as a member of the NEO  NJCAA Athletic Hall of Fame Committee.
 
Smith earned an associate’s degree from NEO in 1947and a bachelor’s degree from Midwestern in 1949. He attended Oklahoma State University and then completed his master’s at Kansas State College in Pittsburg in 1958. He also earned a professional degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1963.
Bill Smith began his career in education more than 50 years ago as a teacher and coach – first in Prague, then in Miami. He was an assistant coach at Miami High School from 1955-57. He served as principal at Miami Junior High from 1957-67, then as principal of Miami High School from 1967-1970.
