John Tiger came to NEO in 1958 from Seminole, Oklahoma. Tiger was an outstanding linebacker for the Norseman where he earned an NJCAA All American Award in 1959. He also lettered in both football and track. While at NEO, Tiger received the Carl Rigney Award for his outstanding traits of scholarship, leadership, and athleticism. At the NJCAA Championship bowl in Texarkana, TX, Tiger was named the game’s outstanding player. Upon graduation, Tiger went on to become the captain of the Jayhawks Football Team at the University of Kansas. Tiger worked as a graduate assistant at Kansas until 1964 when Red Robertson called to ask him to return to NEO to coach the Golden Norseman. During his tenure as an assistant coach at NEO, the Golden Norseman won two National Championships in 1967 and 1969. John Tiger is one of few coaches who both played on and coached a Golden Norseman National Championship team.
