Wrestlers Split in Oklahoma City Dual

Defeat Lyons 53-3, Lose to OCU 18-16

The Norsemen wrestling team traveled to Oklahoma City last evening (11/12/2015) for dual meets against Lyons College and host Oklahoma City University, both NAIA schools.

In the first dual of the evening the NEO men recorded their second dual meet win of the year 53-3 winning six matches via pin.  Pin winners were Mitchell Sellers, 141 lbs., Dustin Hayden, 149 lbs., Kristian Holguin-Mendez 157 lbs., Dawaylon Barnes 165 lbs., Jacob Hill 184 lbs., and Blake Andrews 285 lbs.  Winning by forfeit were Riley Betchan 174 lbs., and Joe Gaither 197 lbs. Curtis Burnett recorded an 18-1 technical fall.  Logan Terrill 125 lbs. lost to Dustin Miller (ranked #15 NAIA) in a close match 7-5. Final score 53-3 the Norsemen!

The second match of the evening sent NEO to battle with the #2 ranked NAIA team Oklahoma City University.  In a tightly contested match, NEO fell 18-16.  The match started at 157 lbs. and Kristian Holguin-Mendez lost to #1 NAIA wrestler Zack Skates 10-0.  This was followed by four straight OCU wins to put the Norsemen in an 18-0 hole, including losses by Dawaylon Barnes 165 to defending NAIA National Champion ranked #1 Ricky McCarty 8-6 in overtime and Jacob Hill losing to #1 ranked Derick Siversten 5-3.

The Norsemen faught back with five straight wins of their own starting at 285 lbs with a win by Blake Andrews 4-1, followed by victories from Logan Terrill 125,  Curtis Burnett 133, Mitchell Sellers 141, and Dustin Hayden, 149 all by decisions. 

The Norsemen wrestlers are now 2-1 in dual meets and travel to Maryville University for an open tournament Saturday, November 14, 2015.
