NEO Routes Fort Scott 49-7

FORT SCOTT, Kan. — Two trick plays on punting situations, one by each team, highlighted a 49-7 victory Saturday afternoon by the Northeastern A&M Golden Norsemen over the Fort Scott Community College Greyhounds in the season finale at Frary Field.
With the victory first year head coach Ryan Held's Norsemen finish 5-6 on the season while the Greyhounds wind up 4-7 overall.
Behind the solid running of freshman Cameron Booty, the Golden Norsemen took the opening kickoff 75 yards in 11 plays to grab the lead in the first six minutes of the game.
Booty, who carried the ball six times for 45 yards, concluded the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run at the 9:37 mark in the first quarter. Gabriel Rui kicked the point-after for a 7-0 Norse lead.
After neither team could move the football, the Golden Norse were forced to punt into a brisk northerly wind in a 4th-and-6 situation.
Freshman punter Cole Moos realized that Fort Scott was not bringing pressure, so he took off on a nifty 52-yard touchdown run. The Rui extra point with just 0:06 seconds left in the first quarter gave NEO a 14-0 cushion.
"Cole actually made that decision on his own," NEO secondary coach Chad Davis said. "We've practiced this before and he knows that if all he sees are his own players jerseys, then he has the option to run."
Less than one minute later, the Greyhounds unleashed some trickery of their own.
After failing to gain a first down, punter Matt Vincent took the snap and lobbed a 62-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Landon James-Wilson on a crossing route. Blayke Lindenman booted the extra point for a 14-7 deficit with 14:06 left until halftime.
With the constant 15-mile per hour wind at their back, the Norsemen needed only four plays to cover 64 yards to increase their lead.
Sophomore quarterback Dezmond Stegall found veteran wide out Samory Collier open for a 34-yard TD pass at the 11:11 juncture. The PAT by Rui created a 21-7 Norse lead.
Following a 3-and-out series by the Hounds, NEO marched to the Fort Scott 19-yard line before the drive stalled.
Rui failed to get lift on his 36-yard field goal attempt and the Greyhounds deflected the kick with 10:18 left in the second quarter.
Stegall connected with freshman wide receiver Gary McKnight, Jr., for an 86-yard touchdown pass with 2:56 before intermission. The throw came on the third play of an 81-yard drive by NEO. Rui kicked the point-after for a 28-7 advantage.
With 0:55 seconds before half, the Greyhounds had a touchdown taken off the scoreboard after a 65-yard interception return by cornerback Jakarri Hunt was erased because of a block-in-the-back penalty.
During the entire second half, the Golden Norse defense held the Hounds to only 61 yards in total offense.
Following a solid defensive stand to start the third quarter that resulted on a 3-and-out possession by Fort Scott, Stegall completed passes of 27, 30 and 5 yards to guide NEO 64 yards in five plays.
Freshman Jesse Gregory concluded NEO's drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge with 10:16 showing on the clock. Rui kicked the extra point for a 35-7 margin.
A fumble by James-Wilson on the ensuing kickoff was recovered by NEO's Dakota Deissner at the Fort Scott 30-yard line.
Two plays later, the Stegall-to-Collier combo clicked for a 30-yard TD pass play for the Golden Norsemen. Rui's extra point with 9:21 left in the third quarter increased NEO's lead to a 42-7 score.
Late in the fourth quarter, NEO freshman linebacker Quentin Nails pilfered an errant pass by Greyhound quarterback Marc Walbridge and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown. The PAT by Rui with 5:57 left in the game concluded the scoring.
Booty rushed for 89 yards on 27 carries to lead NEO's ground game which accumulated 184 yards on
46 carries.
Stegall completed 12 of 22 passes for 227 yards and three TDs with one interception.
McKnight led the Golden Norse receiving corps with three catches for 98 yards while Khalil Warren added three receptions for 41 yards.
Freshman running back Devin Taylor led the Hounds with 59 yards on 17 carries and veteran Kyle Hammond contributed 52 yards on 15 carries. Fort Scott finished with 1:30 yards on 43 carries.
Walbridge completed 7 of 22 passes for 36 yards with two interceptions while punter Vincent completed one pass for 62 yards.
