Golden Norse Hope To Get Back On Winning Track

ENID— Seeking to snap a three-game losing streak, Northeastern A&M's Golden Norsemen battle the Jets of Northern Oklahoma College, Monday at 8 p.m. in Enid's Mabee Center.


After dropping a 71-66 loss last Thursday in the NEO Field House to Redlands Community College, coach Dustin Grover's Golden Norse start a two-game road trip with a 10-7 season record. The Norsemen are 2-4 in the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Both NEO basketball teams remain on the road Wednesday for a conference double-header in the Raymond C. Harber Field House at Seminole State College. The women's game tips off at 6 p.m. followed by the men's game at 8 p.m.
Coach Greg Shamburg has guided the NOC-Enid Jets to a 3-4 record in the OCAC and a 12-5 overall mark in his 12th year as head coach. The Jets suffered a 99-91 loss last Thursday at Poteau against Carl Albert State College.
Last season the Jets dropped a 54-50 decision to Connors State College in the semifinals of the Region 2 Tournament in Shawnee. The Jets finished 16-14 overall and third in the conference with an 11-7 record.
During the regular season last year, the two teams took advantage of home court to split the series.
The Jets posted a 79-66 victory in Enid behind a 17-point performance by point-guard  Kyndall Dudley. Frederico Santos and Geraldo Isla combined for 12 points each to lead NEO.
Returning to the NEO Field House, the Golden Norsemen had five players score in double figures to earn an 86-76 win. Santos completed his 17th double-double of the season to lead the Norse with 20 points and 18 rebounds. Ja'mill Powell contributed 16 points while Derrick Frye came off the bench to score 15, Jeff Newberry 12 and Jake Roach 11. 
Jets' sophomore guard Dalen Qualls scored a game-high 31 points while Jeremy Espinoza added 17 points for NOC-Enid.
Ranking 12th in the nation with a 97.1 scoring average per game, the Jets return four sophomores from last year's team.
Five members of the Jets' squad are averaging double figures in scoring. Sophomore shooting guard Ben Berry (6-4 from Mustang) leads the Jets both in scoring (16.4 points per game) and rebounding (6.7 average).
Freshman forward Jordan Evans (6-5 from Pearland, Texas) has a 12.5 scoring average and a 3.4 rebounding mark.
Another freshman, point-guard Daryck Jones (5-9 from Midwest City) has contributed 56 assists and 21 steals while scoring 11.1 points per game for NOC-Enid.
Midwest City guard Cornell Neal (5-10, freshman) leads the Jets with 107 assists and 27 steals with an 11-point scoring average.
Freshman guard Ja'wan Smith (6-2 from Fayetteville, Ark.) is contributing 10.1 points through 17 games while recording 21 assists and 19 steals.
Veteran guard Christian Leach continues to lead NEO with a 15.9 scoring average while grabbing four rebounds per game. Leach leads the Norsemen with 53 assists and 21 steals.
Sophomore shooting guard Derrick Frye averages 14.3 points and 5.1 rebounding per game for the Golden Norsemen.
Veteran guard Ja'mill Powell is scoring 13.5 points per game and averaging 4.7 rebounds for NEO.
Freshman post Igor Ibaka leads the Golden Norse with a 9.2 rebounding average while scoring 13.3 points per contest.
