NEO Defense Shuts Down SE Prep For Win

9/21/2013 7:20:00 PM

Freshman quarterback Tony Kiefer accounted for 58 percent of Northeastern A&M's offense as the No. 24th ranked Golden Norsemen cruised to a 42-10 victory Saturday over the Houston Southeast Prep Academy Spartans at Robertson Field.

While snapping a two-game losing streak, coach Shirred Potters Golden Norse are 2-2 on the season while coach Anthony Fogle's Spartans are 0-4 on the year.
With a brief five-day turnaround the Golden Norsemen return to competition in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference on Thursday by hosting the Tyler (Texas) Junior College Apaches at 7 p.m. on Robertson Field.
The 17th ranked Apaches are 3-0 on the season after they shutout the Spartans 49-0 last weekend in Tyler and enjoyed an open date this weekend. The Thursday game will be the conference opener for Tyler while the Norsemen are 0-1 in the league.
Fans were treated to a visit by two former Golden Norsemen running backs. All-American tailback Al Consuegra and his wife Donna along with tailback Ramero "Ram" Gonzales attended the game with former hall of fame head coach Chuck Bowman.
Both players were members of Bowman's 1967 National Championship team and Consuegra, who participated in the coin toss, was named Most Valuable Player of the Shrine Bowl in Savannah, Ga.
Although Kiefer (5-11, 185 from McAlester) was recruited out of high school as a pure athlete, through four games with the Golden Norse he has shared quarterback responsibilities with redshirt sophomore Mitch Manley.
"Tony is a natural athlete with excellent quickness and pure football savoy," Poteete said. "He is so talented that he needs to be in the lineup because of his ability to make things happen."
Starting the game in a rather precarious fashion, the Golden Norsemen took the opening kickoff and moved to the Spartans 47-yard line.
On a quarterback dive play Kiefer lost the handle on the ball and Southeast Prep cornerback Wyatt Raymond picked up the loose pigskin and rambled 31 yards to the NEO 22-yard line.
Three plays later the Golden Norse forced Abram Garcia to punt from his own 43-yard line.
Garcia's punt was blocked by NEO linebacker Cameron Colbert and defensive end Donavon McLeod scooped up the ball and returned it 25 yards to the Spartans 11-yard line.
NEO tailback Sheldon Wilson dashed straight up the middle on the first play for a touchdown. Tyler Cortez kicked the extra point to give NEO a 7-0 lead with 11:04 left in the first quarter.
With time winding down in the first 15 minutes, Kiefer guided the Norse 47 yards in seven plays for another touchdown. On a fourth-and-five call, Kiefer skirted left end for a 7-yard TD run just one second gone in the second quarter. Cortez missed the point-after wide left for a 13-0 NEO margin.
After another staunch defensive stand by the Golden Norse forced the Spartans to punt, Kiefer connected with a 24-yard pass to wide out Samory Collier during a 62-yard drive.
Unfortunately for NEO the drive stalled at the Spartans 9-yard line. Cortez trotted on and kicked a 26-yard field goal to produce a 16-0 Norse cushion with 9:52 before halftime.
Southeast Prep finally jump started their offense behind the running of tailback Trey Cooper and covered 58 yards in eight plays before the Norse defense kept them at bay. Cooper carried the ball seven straight times for 30 yards but could not sustain the momentum.
Garcia kicked a 37-yard field goal to create a 16-3 deficit with 4:57 until intermission.
After Kiefer connected on passes of 11, 10 and 12 yards and veteran tailback Elliot Hawkins added runs of 13 and 9 yards, the Golden Norse used a bit of slight-of-hand to score just before halftime.
Kiefer took the snap and lateraled it to wide out Dakota Warrington. With wide receiver Corey Lawrence slipping behind the Spartans secondary, Warrington threw a strike to Lawrence for a 21-yard TD pass. Cortez kicked the PAT with 0:40 seconds on the clock to give NEO a 23-3 halftime margin.
During the first five minutes of the third quarter, McLeod made his presence known again by blocking a 47-yard field goal attempt by Garcia.
With the Golden Norse stationed near mid-field, Kiefer attempted to hit wide out Dawson Myers on a crossing pattern.
The ball bounded off Myers hands and into the waiting arms of Spartan cornerback Raymond. He returned the interception 50 yards for a touchdown with 4:33 showing on the clock. Garcia's extra point created a 23-10 score.
After the pick-six, Poteete sent Manley out to quarterback and the veteran engineered a 91-yard, 12-play drive that stalled at the Spartans 24-yard line.
Freshman Dylan Lipps replaced Cortez as NEO's placekicker and nailed a 41-yard field goal for a 26-10 Golden Norse lead with 1:11 left in the third quarter.
During the final 15 minutes the Golden Norsemen received a 1-yard TD run by Wilson and a spectacular 72-yard interception return for a TD by Devron Moore before Lipps kicked a 37-yard field goal to conclude the scoring.
Kiefer led the Norse ground game with 91 yards on 15 carries and one TD as NEO amassed 242 yards on 57 attempts. Hawkins contributed 56 yards on 12 carries while Wilson rushed for 36 yards on 11 carries and two TDs.
Along with his solid rushing, Kiefer completed 15 of 23 passes for 198 yards and one interception. Manley hit 2 of 4 passes for 34 yards while Warrington threw a 21-yard touchdown pass. The Norse threw for 253 total yards.
Warrington also paced the NEO receiving corps with six catches for 82 yards while Jermaine Rathod added four catches for 58 yards.
NEO's defensive unit limited the Spartans to 53 total yards rushing on 36 carries and only 23 yards via the pass.
