Baseball Earns Split With # 1 Iowa Western

After constructing a six-game winning streak, the 13th ranked Northeastern A&M Golden Norsemen dropped a 12-1 decision to No. 1 rated Iowa Western Community College Tuesday afternoon on Homa Thomas Field.


Coach Roger Ward's Norsemen opened the twinbill against the Reivers with a 10-3 victory before dropping their first game at home in seven tries. The Norsemen are 8-3 on the season while the Iowa Western Reivers are 8-5 overall.
NEO concludes a nine-game homestand on Saturday with a 1 p.m. double-header against the Lakers of Metropolitan Community College-Maplewoods of Kansas City, Mo.
Iowa Western constructed a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of the nightcap on a double by David Parret and a homerun by Kaden Moore.
The Reivers added solo runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 4-0 cushion. Luke Tewes hit a solo homer to lead off the fourth.
Andrew Standifer singled and scored on a RBI double to right-center by Corey Dodd for NEO's only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
A  two-run homer by Tyler Ware increased Iowa Western's lead to 6-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
Iowa Western added a solo run in the top of the sixth inning before a two-run triple by Ware and a two-run double by Jordan Schlehuber ignited a five-run seventh inning for the Reivers.
Angel Ortiz collected two of the five Golden Norse hits.
Scoring three runs in the second and third innings, the Golden Norsemen added four runs in the sixth en route to a 10-3 rout in the first game with the Reivers.
After Iowa Western scored a run in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch, the Norsemen grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs, singles by Kaleb Thomas and Jonathon Stewart started a three-run Norse rally. Alex Wise doubled scoring both Thomas and Stewart before Ramon Laureano singled scoring Wise.
A double by Jackson Morris and a two-run home run by Dodd sparked a three-run third by NEO. Thomas walked, stole second and scored on a RBI single by Stewart for a 6-1 Norse cushion.
Parret lined a two-run homer down the left field line to slice the deficit to 6-3 in the top of the fourth inning.
Consecutive singles by Laureano, Kevin Meyers and Morris preceded a grand slam home run by Ortiz  in the bottom of the sixth inning for NEO.
Sophomore Keaton Hernandez allowed three runs on four hits to earn the win for the Norsemen.
Ortiz, Stewart, Morris and Laureanu each had two hits to pace the 12-hit Norse offense.
Facing Northern Oklahoma College-Enid in a non-conference double-dip on Sunday, the Golden Norsemen earned a 13-3 and 3-2 sweep over the Jets.
Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of the second game, NEO rallied on a two-out RBI single by Ortiz. Thomas started the rally with a single. After Wise singled, Morris walked to fill the bases. Meyers walked scoring Thomas for a 2-2 tie. After Standifer forced Wise at home, Ortiz singled sharply to left scoring pinch runner Samuel Crabtree.
Ortiz produced two of the seven NEO hits.
Against the Jets in Sunday's first game, NEO built a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a triple by Wise, Laureanu reaches on a fielder's choice, a two-run single by Meyers, a two-run homer by Ortiz.
The Jets tallied three runs in the top of the second inning highlighted by a two-run single by Keaton Webb.
Walks to Wise, Laureanu and Meyers filled the bases for NEO in the bottom of the second. Morris delivered a two-run single for a 6-3 Norse cushion.
Wise blasted a three-run homer scoring Dodd and Andrew Miller for a 9-3 NEO margin in the fifth inning before four walks and a fielding error led to a four-run bottom of the sixth for the Norsemen.
Kyle Byrd limited the Jets to three runs on three hits.
