Erupting for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, Northeastern A&M's 13th ranked Golden Norsemen completed a double-header sweep Saturday over the Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods Lakers at Homa Thomas Field.
After winning the first game by a 3-1 margin, coach
Roger Ward's Golden Norse posted a come-from-behind 5-3 victory in the nightcap. With the sweep the Norsemen are 10-3 on the season while the Lakers are 0-3 on the young season.
The Golden Norsemen travel to Coffeyville, Kan., Tuesday, for a 1 p.m. double-header with the Coffeyville Red Ravens. The Red Ravens are 9-9 on the year.
NEO returns to the friendly confines of Homa Thomas Field on Wednesday for a 1 p.m. twinbill with Moraine Valley Community College of Palos Hills, Ill. The Cyclones are beginning a six-game spring break trip to Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas.
Against the MCC-Maple Woods Lakers in the first game, the Golden Norse broke a scoreless tie with a solo run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out,
Hector Candelaria hit a solo homerun to put the Norse ahead to stay.
Corey Dodd singled to start a two-run bottom of the fifth inning. After
Andrew Standifer doubled, Candelaria was hit by a pitch to fill the bases.
Jonathan Stewart walked scoring Dodd before
Alex Wise produced a sacrifice fly to center scoring Standifer for a 3-0 Norse margin.
Ethan Smith singled, stole second and scored as Beau Stoker reached on a fielding error by Standifer at first base.
With a double, Standifer was one of seven Norsemen to collect hits along with Wise, Dodd, Candelaria, Stewart,
Ramon Laureano and
Angel Ortiz.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning of the second game, Stewart started NEO's rally with a single to left. Wise delivered an infield bunt single before Laureano singled to center scoring Stewart for a 3-3 tie.
Walks to
Kevin Meyers and
Jackson Morris by reliever John Osbourne scored Wise. Ortiz bounced into a fielder's choice as Laureano scored the final run of the rally.
The Lakers constructed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning after Brad Dillenberger singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a fielding error by Wise at third base on a ground ball hit by Ryan Cooper. Stoker followed with a two-run home run.
