TONKAWA — Northeastern A&M's Golden Norsemen soccer team close out the regular season Saturday with a 4 p.m. Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference match against the Northern Oklahoma College-Tonkawa Mavericks.
After dropping a 2-1 decision to Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods in Kansas City, Mo., on Tuesday, coach
John Parrigon's Norsemen enter the match with an 0-1 conference record and a 3-12-1 season mark.
Earlier in the season the Mavericks posted a 3-2 victory over the Golden Norsemen in a Region 2 clash at Robertson Field. Coach Michael DuRoy's Mavericks are 7-7 on the season.
With a victory the Golden Norsemen and Mavericks would play a third match at a site and time yet to be determined.
Winner of Region 2 advances to a playoff on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the winner of Region 5 which includes teams from West Texas and Eastern New Mexico.
The playoff winner advances to the Plains District Championship scheduled for Nov. 7-8 at Hummer Park in Topeka, Kan. The district playoff features the winners of the Region 2-Region 5 playoff and Region 6 (Kansas).
Both the winner and the runner-up of the Plains District Championship advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association Men's Division I National Championship, Nov. 18-23, on the campus of Tyler (Texas) Junior College.
