TONKAWA – Starting the final swing through the Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference, Northeastern A&M's Golden Norsemen travel Monday to the Foster-Piper Fieldhouse for an 8 p.m. rematch with the Northern Oklahoma College Mavericks.
After earning an 87-72 victory over Seminole State College last Wednesday in the NEO Fieldhouse, coach
Dustin Grover's Golden Norse are 6-3 in the conference and 13-8 on the season. The Norse return home Thursday for an 8 p.m. rematch with the Jets of Northern Oklahoma College-Enid.
“We're on a three-game winning streak and we are getting better every game out,” Grover said. “We are playing with a singular goal in mind as a team and it's really paid off.”
Coach Brett Weiberg's Mavericks have won five of six games since returning from Christmas break. The Mavericks are tied with Connors State for the OCAC lead with a 7-2 record. Following a 80-59 win over Redlands College last Wednesday, the Mavs are 18-3 on the year.
Buried by a 29-point run in the first half, the Golden Norsemen suffered a 76-60 loss Nov. 19 to the Mavericks in the conference opener for both teams in the NEO Fieldhouse. Nkosi Ali and
Jake Roach were the only Norsemen to reach double figures with 11 points each. Cortez Colbert paced the Mavs with 14 total points while Phillip Leonard added 13, TJ Thornton 12 and Colin Voss 10.
“In that first game, we just fell too far behind and couldn't recover,” Grover said. “They pressured us in the back court and created a lot of easy baskets through turnovers.
“We responded well in the second half and outscored them 36 to 27 in the second half,” Grover said. “The thing is, they are very tough to beat on their home court, so we've got to be ready to play.”
